Abriendo Puertas

Abriendo Puertas is a program focused on helping hispanic children that are raised in a primarily Spanish speaking house hold to integrate easily into the English speaking school systems in our surrounding areas. Centro Latino seeks to meet the needs of the hispanic/latino population in our communities. One of the needs that we seek to fill is in the education of the children. According to end-of-grade results from 2018-19, fewer than 50% of Hispanic children in all three school systems of the county were proficient readers by the end of third grade. Only slightly more than one-fourth of 3rd Grade English Language Learners county wide were proficient readers.

Children that participate in Centro Latino’s Abriendo Puertas (AP) find it a safe place to learn…away from bullying and the struggle to understand a language, culture, and ideas that are unfamiliar to them. The current program focuses primarily on children’s academic growth by helping children individually with their reading comprehension needs. The program strives to help children grasp concepts that they may not understand in the classroom or may be unfamiliar to their families.

Our program thrives off of volunteers from the community that have a heart to help children with their education and the Supportive college students that are provided to us by Lenoir Rhyne University through the work study program. The program could not reach as many children as it reaches without the help of these amazing tutors. If you would like to learn more about how you can get involved, please reach out to the director of the program at (828) 381-4252.
